FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE AMERICAN BOARD OF PEDIATRICS AND THE PEDIATRICS BOARD REVIEW (PBR)

"Hi Ashish... WHAT WAS YOUR SCORE?"

Ashish Goyal - Author of Pediatrics Board Review

I FAILED the first time. I followed common advice given by others. I realized instantly that it was flawed when I entered the exam and I ended up failing by about 7-9 questions. I changed my strategies and scored 160 points higher the second time (380 to 540). All of my insights and EFFICIENCY driven strategies are now in the PBR. There is truly nothing else like it on the market.

"WHAT IS THE PASS RATE FOR PEDIATRICS BOARD REVIEW (PBR)?"

For the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Maintenance of Certification exam (aka MOC, or recertification exam), the pass rate has been 100% for 3 years.

For the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Initial Certification board exam, the national pass rate for first-time test takers has traditionally been about 75-80% (as reported by the ABP). The rough data I’ve gathered thus far from surveys and the lack of refund requests suggests a pass rate in the high 90’s for first-time test takers.

Also, PBR has helped MANY people pass the boards after they had failed the pediatric board exam once, twice, three times, four times, five times and even SIX times using other resources. Don’t believe me? Click below to watch this video:

"ASHISH, DID YOU TAKE A BOARD REVIEW COURSE?"

I went through a popular DVD course. In hindsight, it was a HORRIBLE use of my precious time. Like most study materials on the market, it was simply too overwhelming to allow for 3-5 quality reviews in a timely manner. The other popular resource that I had was MUCH too basic to allow for exposure to all of the board-relevant high-yield topics.

"I'VE HEARD THERE’S A COURSE IN *** CALLED THE *** THAT OFFERS A 100% GUARANTEE. HAVE YOU HEARD OF IT?"

I’ve seen their paid advertisements on Google and read some reviews about it online. When I start to hear people talking about taking courses and watching DVDs, I get worried that they’re setting themselves up for failure because they’re spreading themselves too thin (the number 2 reason most people fail). To some degree, “less is more” for this exam. Focus on an excellent primary resource and know it inside and out!

"DO YOU WRITE QUESTIONS FOR THE AMERICAN BOARD OF PEDIATRICS EXAM?"

Even though I failed the first time, I did so well the second time around that the ABP asked ME to write questions for them! It's a little insane, but I was happy to contributed several.

"WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT PEDIATRIC PREP QUESTIONS WRITTEN BY THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS (AAP)?"

I think they are most representative of the questions you'll see on the boards, BUT there are MANY caveats! When it comes to PREP questions, please read the following CRITICAL articles:

"I'M A HORRIBLE TEST TAKER! DO YOU ALSO TEACH TEST-TAKING STRATEGIES?"

YES! There is no physician-taught course that specifically addresses how to use TEST-TAKING TECHNIQUE to increase your board scores. The PBR Core Concepts in Test-Taking Strategies Webinar helps you instantly increase your board scores. You even learn how quickly eliminate answer choices WITHOUT reading the clinical vignettes and WITHOUT having significant medical knowledge about the disease process.

The PBR Core Study Guide is also FILLED with strategies, "PEARLS," links to high-yield images and mnemonics to help you EFFICIENTLY study for and pass your pediatric board exam.

"CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME FREE SAMPLES?"

I like giving :-)

Just fill out the from below and you’ll get two COMPLETE chapters (in full) directly from the PBR Core Study Guide. They’ll even be in PDF format so can print them out.

"IS THE ONLINE CORE STUDY GUIDE AND Q&A BOOK IN A PDF FORMAT?"

The free material is in a downloadable PDF format, the paid membership includes PDF-style scrolling formats of both books, and a searchable format of the Core Study Guide as well, but it cannot be downloaded to your computer. Take a look:

"DOES THE PEDIATRICS BOARD REVIEW (PBR) MATERIAL FOLLOW THE AMERICAN BOARD OF PEDIATRICS CONTENT SPECIFICATIONS?"

When it comes to PBR’s system to help you pass, I see the ABP content specifications for the pediatric boards as “outside material.” I’d say 80-90% of the content specifications are covered in the PBR material. However, my strong recommendation is that you do not get caught up with trying to cover every single topic in the content specs. PBR has has more than enough information in it to help you pass. Once you have used and mastered the PBR “roadmap to success” that’s outline in the front of the book, then start looking at “outside material.”

"WHY DON’T YOU OFFER A 100% MONEY BACK PASS GUARANTEE FOR SECOND-TIME TEST-TAKERS?"

The American Board of Pediatrics initial certification exam is very tough. I’ve met several people who have failed multiple times (11 times seems to be the record, 3 times is extremely common, and now that the rules have changed 7 seems to be the max that I'm hearing about). Based on these numbers, I get the sense that those who fail the ABP exam once are much more likely than the general public to fail again.

BUT, I am very excited to still give you at least a FEW guarantees (the most popular review book comes with NO guarantee!). If you are a repeater and you fail after purchasing the PBR Ultimate Bundle Pack, or a higher level resource, I’ll do the following:

To qualify, simply visit the guarantee page and register all of your product in the same time frame requested for first-time test takers.

"I'M NERVOUS ABOUT JUMPING IN. IF I BUY THE ULTIMATE BUNDLE PACK BUT RETURN THE HARDCOPY BOOKS, WHAT WOULD THE REFUND BE?"

Or, you can even signup for the Online Bundle Pack and try it out for a couple of days to check out the WHOLE BOOK! If you like it, then you can UPGRADE to the Ultimate Bundle Pack with NO PENALTY during your 2-day window.

"WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT STUDYING WITH OTHERS? CAN YOU HELP ME FIND AN ONLINE STUDY PARTNER?"

I think joining forces with a study buddy is an excellent idea! That’s why I created PBR’s Facebook CREW! PBR members can use it to interact with each other, ask questions, share mnemonics, successes, fears, everything! It’s pretty awesome.

"DO YOU HAVE A PEDIATRIC BOARD EXAM FORUM?"

The PBR Facebook CREW! is an extremely interactive community of NEW and EXPERIENCED pediatricians filled with peers who are TAKING the exam this year AND with peers who recently TOOK the exam.

Traditional forums are difficult to navigate and keep up with. The PBR Facebook CREW! sends you an email notification as soon as a response comes in to your question. There’s encouragement and genuine educational and emotional support to keep you pushing through!

I simply can’t recommend it enough.

"HOW MANY QUESTIONS COME IN YOUR PEDIATRIC QUESTION AND ANSWER BOOK?"

We're not interested in making or selling “fluff.” Good questions take time to create. PBR offers 50 extremely high yield questions that are EXCELLENT, and they cost LESS than $1 per question.

PBR members often comment on how the structure of the PRB questions remarkably mirrors the questions found on the American Board of Pediatrics initial certification and recertification exams.

It’s completely worth it. Plus, some of the material covered in the Q&A book is NOT in the Core Study Guide. I hope to create more questions soon. Regardless, please note that PBR’s Q&A book should NOT be considered practice material, but rather CORE study content.

"I’VE HEARD THAT THE PBR SYSTEMS LIKE TO FOCUS ON EFFICIENCY. CAN YOU GIVE ME AN EXAMPLE?"

If you download the free PBR chapters from this page, you'll immediately understand how the PBR focuses on EFFICIENCY.

I try to make sure that there is almost NO need for you to cross-reference topics across multiple study resources or chapters.

For example, while you’re studying about one of the “Diamond” diseases (e.g. Diamond Blackfan), you’ll also see notes about the other “Diamond” disease (e.g. Schwachman Diamond) right next to it as a reminder of other similarly named diseases. You’ll also be given a review of that subject, right there and then.

Another HUGE example has to do with images. Most people use Zitelli as an atlas. If you have to reading about a topic in my study guide, then look it up in Zitelli’s index and then reading about it in Zitelli, you’ll spend an hour reading about one topic. That’s extremely inefficient and adds countless hours to the > 200 hours most people spend studying for the exam. I’ve included high-quality image web-links to topics throughout the core study guide for quick referencing so that the process is streamlined and not redundant.

"ARE THE PEDIATRICS BOARD REVIEW (PBR) ONLINE RESOURCES AVAILABLE ON THE APPLE IPHONE, IPAD, AMAZON KINDLE, GOOGLE ANDROID, SAMSUNG GALAXY OR OTHER WEB-ENABLED PHONES AND TABLETS?"

YES. It’s actually pretty cool. You can search for a SINGLE word within the 2000 topics and find it within seconds. If you choose a membership level that offers desktop access, you also instantly get access to the Core Study Guide by phone or tablet as well. The materials cannot be downloaded, and the Q&A book is only viewable on Flash enabled devices and desktops. Check it out!

In the future, Pediatrics Board Review will also release iPad-enabled iBooks and Kindle ready ebooks as well.

Again, there’s NO extra charge for access on your web-enabled devices once you become an online member.

"IS PBR A GOOD RESOURCE TO USE FOR THE PEDIATRIC RECERTIFICATION MOC EXAM?"

PBR's pass rate has been 100% for multiple consecutive years for the pediatric recertification exam! for the

The information you need to know is the exact same for the initial and the recertification exams. I have written questions for the pediatric recertification exam.

Based on the American Board of Pediatrics’ requested format, it is my very strong belief that the pool of questions is the same. BUT, I do think that the recertification exam questions tend to be the ones that are more straightforward. That means you will not need to know as much detail for pediatric subspecialties.

"DO ONLINE MEMBERSHIPS EXPIRE?"

Yes and NO!

For most of the online resources, membership expires after 12 months. But, there’s an UPGRADE button you can click for discounted extensions. Discounted extensions are only available while you are within your 12-month membership period.

WHAT ARE THE SHIPPING TIMES FOR THE HARDCOPY BOOKS?

Standard Shipping: Estimated delivery times are between 7-14 business days. Team PBR technically doesn't work on the weekends, but sometimes we can't help ourselves! Therefore, people often get their books within 7 regular days.

Expedited Shipping: The estimated delivery times are 5-7 business days. Again, customers sometimes receive their books in as little as 5 regular days.

Please note that all shipping times are estimates. Weather, high volume seasons for mail (like Christmas), and other factors that are out of our control can affect delivery times.

I failed the exam several times I don’t mind having a tutor to help me pass the boards. I have 100 employees working for me and I need to feed them. Passing this exam is very crucial for me and I need help.

Hi Sarojini,

I’m guessing you are asking if I provide a tutoring service. Unfortunately, my full-time job and family commitments do not allow for that. The intro to my book does discuss an optional donation to AVSAR for some extra 1 on 1 coaching time from me, but it’s not exactly a full tutor service.

1. On the online version of your book, can you highlight and make notes?
2. Is the online version available for iPad/iPhone yet?

Reply
Ashish Goyal, M.D. -

Hi Janelle. Great questions.
1. The online version of the book does not allow highlighting. For that reason, and because studies show that hardcopy books help to increase retention, I always recommend that people signup for the Ultimate Bundle Pack which gives you the hardcopy versions of the study guides as well as the online versions.
2. YES. The online core study guide is viewable on the iPad and iPhone. The Q&A section is only available in hardcopy and desktop computer format.

Hope that helps!

Is there any difference between the Maintenace of Certification (MOC) exam and the Pediatric Board Exam ?

Reply
Ashish Goyal, M.D. -

Hi Wai. YES! Huge difference. The pediatrics MOC exam is much easier than the initial boards. The pass rate for the MOC exam is very high compared to the initial certification exam. In terms of study guides, the PBR has worked out very well for MOC test takers. We had a 100% pass rate for 2011 and 2012 for MOC test-takers.

Hope that helps!

I m going to take recertication moc in sep and am short of time. What will be the best strategy in short time

Reply
Ashish Goyal, M.D. -

Hi Arif,

I think you have PLENTY of time to study. The best strategy would be for you to purchase the PBR Ultimate Bundle Pack and go through the material a few times. Since you already passed the American Board of Pediatrics initial board certification exam, that puts you in a great position to pass the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) exam.

Using the Pediatrics Board Review (PBR) would be a very good idea. The pass rates for MOC test-takers in 2011, 2012 and 2013 for docs using the PBR has been 100%, so I think you’d be in great hands.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Best,
– Ashish

How many questions are in the online Q&A?

Reply
Ashish Goyal, M.D. -

Hi Adam,

The PBR Q&A book contains 50 questions that are extremely high-yield and I consider them to be “core material” in addition to the PBR Core Study Guide. I don’t think of them as typical “practice questions.” So, I tell PBR members to go over the 50 questions 3-5x, the same way I recommend that they go over the PBR Core Study Guide 3x if they are first-time board takers, or 5x if they have failed before.

In terms of other resources on the market, I recommend using those board style questions for practice. The following 2 PBR articles will help you out:
http://www.pediatricsboardreview.com/why-prep-questions-are-not-the-best-study-questions
http://www.pediatricsboardreview.com/how-many-aap-prep-questions-should-i-do

If cost is an issue for you, or you simply need more pediatric board review practice questions, I have exclusive discount codes that you can use to get access to a 1000 question Q Bank through BoardVitals at a very reasonable price. For example, 6 weeks of access for just $99 as opposed to paying $400-800 for 3 years of PREP questions. You can see the discount codes in the middle of the following PBR TOOLS page:
http://www.pediatricsboardreview.com/tools

Hope that helps!
